Outreach activities
The First Steps outreach program is part of a five-county eastern Oregon Early Literacy and Learning League effort to expand and enhance readiness to learn services for children in daycare, preschool, and Head Start classes. The goal is to help children become ready to learn, preparing them for school and economic success.
First Steps offers storyteller programming with reading, finger plays, and music; monthly "Learn at Home" newsletter for caregivers and parents; rotating book boxes for centers and free books for children to take home enjoy.
First Steps and other eastern Oregon Early Literacy and Learning League programs are funded by grants and matching funds from local library districts, community organizations, County Commissions on Children and Families and the Oregon State Library's Ready to Read grant program. Other contributers this year were PacifiCorp Foundation, PGE Foundation, and the Wildhorse Foundation.
